Temperance Youth is looking for Editors to head up our Departments. Each Department Editor will work with the Editor in Chief and editorial staff to concept and develop stories, assign stories to writers and/or freelancers and manage contracts, assist in gathering images, report and write stories of varying length and edit completed stories. Reporting to the Managing Editor, each applicant must have: a strong grasp of the English language ( including spelling, grammar and punctuation skills ) and the ability to meet and enforce strict deadlines.
We currently have more than one opening for an Editor.
Duties
• Perform fact-checking and proofreading as required
• Assign and edit feature stories under the direction of the EIC
• Develop and maintain productive relationships with writers
• Write feature stories, magazine department items, and news stories at the direction of the EIC
• Assist the Managing Editor in maintaining smooth workflow and meeting deadlines
• Assist the Managing Editor in maintaining smooth workflow and meeting deadlines
• Represent the magazine at religious and publishing conferences, meetings, or other events
Qualifications
Candidates will demonstrate: the ability to assimilate and communicate information on a broad range of topics; editorial skills, including excellent interviewing, writing, story editing and copy editing; excellent command of Associated Press writing style; the ability to manage and lead creative staff; and a familiarity with all aspects of publishing. Minimum of three years of writing or editing experience. Some college with an English or Journalism major a plus, but not required.
Compensation
Positions would be unpaid for now; however, contributors would have a chance to have their work published. Some interns might be able to receive school credit (this needs to be discussed with the university). I would also be providing a place on the Masthead as staff editor and press passes/credentials to exclusive events that we are attending. Candidates may also use this position on resumes & portfolios, and are provided letters of recommendation as requested.
Requirements
Currently, the positions are work from home; therefore, there is no need to worry about morning commute! However, a working computer and reliable internet connection are a must. You will be required, if living in the Houston area to attend all editorial meetings at one of our TBA locations.
